History & Overview

Rajaji is a beautiful National Park located amongst the foothills of the Himalayas known as the Siwalik Hills. The landscape is filled with beautiful white pebbles and streams which descend into these valleys from the Shivalik Range. These streams are in torrent during the monsoon.

The forest type at Rajaji ranges from Riverine, Semi-evergreen, Moist Deciduous, Broad-leaved Mixed Forest and Terai Grassland. There are stretches of Sal Forest as well. The National Park is comprised of 3 Wildlife Sanctuaries, namely : Rajaji, Chilla and Motichur. The Ganges River in the Southern edge separates Motichir and Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary from the Chilla Sanctuary.

Elephants roam in large numbers at Rajaji, and another notable species the Goral or Mountain Goat can be seen here as well. Tigers and Leopards also occupy these habitats, with Himalayan Black Bears at slightly higher places at Rajaji.
